No, this isn’t some awful coding glitch or an illusion. Unlike all the April Fools pranks you will see on Facebook today, this blog post is real. It’s been quite some time since I last wrote anything on here. To be frank, I’ve been extremely lazy and honestly didn’t feel like writing anything. Well I’m back and once again it’s time to kick some ass one word at a time. While people know this day to be April Fools day, it is also the beginning of Autism Awareness Month, the month where Autism Speaks shoves their “Light It Blue” campaign and misguided agenda down your throat faster than breathing tubes in operating rooms. The amount of sometimes harmful propaganda pertaining to Autism can be overwhelming and for those diving into an ocean they know nothing about, it can be the equivalent of climbing Everest without a map. So those who watched last night’s episode of Parenthood were greeted to probably one of the most hear breaking talks you will ever have with a child who is different from the rest. To those who watch the show and haven’t watched last night’s episode I suggest you stop reading this and go watch it on “On Demand” or “Hulu” or “nbc.com” or whatever means you have of catching up on episodes. Friendship Is Magic (Important Life Lessons From a Kid’s Cartoon)

I have a confession to make which will tie into this blog post. It would appear this weekend I have gotten into a show that well, wasn’t really meant to be watched and enjoyed by adult men in this first place but somehow it has ushered quite the following from the 18-35 male demographic. Now if you are a “Brony” or know what one is or you’re familiar with the fandom then you’ve recognized the blog title and already know exactly what show I am now officially hooked on. For those who don’t know what a “Brony” is then allow me to explain. “Bronies” are males from ages 18-35 (sometimes older and sometimes younger) who are avid fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. That’s right, I have gotten hooked to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and before you start looking at me funny or calling me gay or think that I’m some weird sick and twisted individual for watching a show that is aimed at little girls I need to explain to you why the fuss and why the show is so critically acclaimed way outside of its demographic and why I have fallen in love with the show. Life Seems to Have this Sick Way of Not Allowing Room for Error

Okay show of hands, Who watches Parenthood and most importantly who watched this week’s episode? For those who do watch the show and for those who did watch Thursday’s episode then you probably already have an idea what this blog is going to be about but for those who don’t watch the show here’s a bit of a synopsis. Parenthood follows four siblings and their individual families each with their own unique dynamics and predicaments. Now one of those families has a teenager named Max who has Aspergers and though this isn’t the central focus of the entire show, Max does contribute heavily to a decent amount of the central plot lines in the series. Max is somewhat of a texbook Aspie (routine dependent, oblivious to social cues, has trouble coping with drastic change, hyperfocused in a particular subject for him being reptiles, very literal in how he conveys and receives information, and has no filter). But If Autism Doesn’t Look Like the Kid that Drools or that Kid With the Blank Stare, What DOES it Look Like?

It’s been a while since the last time I delivered a masterpiece in the form of a blog post. I have spent the last week and a half recovering from a cold but I’m back and ready to kick ass and take names, in a figurative sort of way. Now the purpose of this blog has always been to change the way we as a society look at Autism but this post is really going to change the way you look at the disorder. This post will take everything you know about Autism and completely shatter it into more pieces than the hardest jigsaw puzzle you’ve ever done. Now in the much older post “You’re Autistic? But You’re So Smart…” I ranted about the way Autism is presented to those may be unfamiliar with the disorder or need to be told what to look for. Now in that blog post I put The May Institute on blast for the portrayal of Autism in a rather PSA that goes viral on the MBTA trains during Autism Awareness month and beyond.
